Book Review [61] : The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

William Shirer (1904-1993) was an American foreign correspondent in the Third Reich and his magnum opus 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' is considered as the most authoritative and accurate work on Nazi Germany, its rise and its eventual decline. He had access to the secret Nazi diaries, communications, archives etc and he quotes those in great detail in this classic. It was first published in 1960 and since then it has maintained both its best seller as well as its classic status. The only issue with this book is its bulkiness, it is more than 1000 pages strong.
Third Reich (1933-45) was the period of wars, genocides, Holocaust, mass executions, political assassinations, treason, war crimes and everything that Human civilization has achieved in all its lifetime. It was the period when almost all Western countries, Japan, China, India (to a certain extent) etc lost "Flowers of their nations". It was the period when one single person destroyed the Europe and killed close to 6 mn non-combatant Jews (Jews lost 50% of their total population in those 5 years 1940-1945) and millions others. It was the period that should never ever repeat in the course of human civilization and its a correct prophecy that if its repeated then the world would end by this. It also gives a very important lessons that victories and defeats are not permanent and one should not treat his/her opponents by imposing unfair and grossly humiliating treaties like "The Treaty of Versailles (June 1919)". Treaties like these make impossible wars possible.
This book talks in great detail about the rise of Hitler from his birth in the Austrian border town in April 1889 to his misadventures in Vienna, his coming to Bavaria when he volunteered to fight in WW-1, his winning of Iron cross for his service in WW-1, his joining of German Worker's party in 1919 and renaming of it to National Socialist German Worker's Party in 1920, his failed Beer Hall Putsch of Nov 1923, his confinement in prison where he wrote 'Mein Kampf', his return and his coming to power after a large number of political maneuvers, his political opportunism,  burning of Reichstag in 1933 to taking the absolute power in his hand by the end of 1933. He started aggressive armament of Germany, occupation of Rhineland in 1936 (this dismantling the treaty of Versailles), occupation of Austria in 1938, annexation of Sudetenland and later Czechoslovakia in 1939 and triggered the WW-2 by invading Poland on the subject of Danzing and Polish corridor on 1st Sept 1939, and his mass executions of Jews in the concentration camps of Dachau, Auschwitz etc, battle of Stalingrad and final humiliation of the Reich on 7 May 1945. This book tells everything in great detail and must be read with an open mind. Third Reich gives us great lessons and they should not be ignored at any cost.
Highly recommended book (10/10)

Book Review [60] : Hello Bastar - The Untold Story Of India’s Maoist Movement

Rahul Pandita is an extra ordinary Journalist and a great story teller. To know the central India and Indian tribals one needs to read P. Sainath's 'Everybody loves a good drought' and 'Hello Bastar - The Untold Story Of India’s Maoist Movement' of Rahul Pandita. 'Hello Bastar' is a great work of investigative journalism and the good quality of this book is that it does not support Maoist cause but it details the facts, the shortcomings of neo-liberal India and abdication of responsibility by the state and Indian elite towards its poor people. This books talks about the history of Maoists movement in India starting from Telangana (1946-1951), Naxalbari and Midnapore (1967-69), Shrikakulam (1967-1970s), Telangana (1976-1980s), Dandakaranaya (1978-), Jangalmahal (2000s) and also tells in great details the modus operandi of Maoists and their leaders.
India has one of the largest concentration of Billionaires in the world, Brazil GDP is higher that of India but it has far lesser number of billionaires than India. India is a country where 10% of its people spends more money on petty IPL match than earned by a bottom 40% over a period of a month. India is a country where more than 47% of its under-5 children are underweight, stunted and wasted. India is a country where more than 33% of its females have lower BMI. India is a country where MMR (212 in 2010), IMR (47 in 2010) are pathetically low, India is a country where more than 30% of its population lives on less than 30 INR per capita per day (according to Planning Commission poverty line 2011).
My take on Maoism:
Inspite if these all shortcomings there is one thing unique about India, Indians in generals are tolerant and non-violent people and history tells us that Indian peasants and poor have revolted in far lesser numbers than anywhere else in the world. May be because of the fatalist nature of Indians or something else i dont know but precisely because of this quality extremism in any form can not succeed in India. The Right wing, Left wing, Liberal and Secular extremists can not succeed in India and they should understand this. Only grass-root level inclusive democracy can work in India.
No egalitarian society has ever been formed/sustained by violent means, history tells us that. USSR had been long dissolved, China is facing lot of distress, Cuba is slowly coming into Capitalist mould while North Korea lives in stone age. The downtrodden people of central India and other tribal areas can only prosper by implementing existing laws impartially and properly, by sharing the profits coming out as a result of exploitation of natural resources and by building schools, hospitals and handicraft industries in tribal areas, and to do that you dont need guns and bombs. Indian state is too big to fail and sooner the Maoists realize that better will for India and Indians.
Overall its a good book to understand the Maoists insurgency and state of the poor Dalits and tribals of India.
Highly recommended (9/10)

Short Diary

Its a great feeling to see your younger brother getting engaged to his future wife, and also a marker that you are getting senile. The engagement was held in Rampura village (close to Madhogarh) on 4th April, this Rampura was a kingdom some decades back and people still call its erstwhile king as "Raja of Rampura". His fort or palace is in utterly shaky shape. Not to digress, the ceremony (Godd bharai and Ring ceremony) was perfectly held and my brother was religiously engaged. Now i can call myself as a Jyestha (or Jeth of my brother's fiancee). Perhaps Indian culture is the only culture where every relation has a name :).
I went to Delhi after the engagement, for my rendezvous and now in Bangalore after those hectic weeks and enjoying  the well earned short break in now not so salubrious climate of Bangalore, the mercury is reaching 35 degree every afternoon but i have neither complains to make nor miles to go before  i sleep.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Neeraj] May i come in Sir?
[MS] Please come in
[Neeraj] Good Morning sir/Mam etc
[MS] You are working in a sun rise sector and still you want to join civil services
[Neeraj] Yes sir
[MS] What do you think of China's building of dam on Brahmaputra?
[Neeraj] Not good for India sir
[MS] Why?
[Neeraj] China will divert water to irrigate land in Yunan province (north and NE of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam can face water scarcity in near future.

[MS] Recently we got an award from a tribunal, what was that?
[Neeraj] Kishenganga river project, we got award on Pakistan
[MS] How is this issue different from China making dams?
[Neeraj] Sir, because we have Indus river treaty with Pakistan, signed in 1960 but we do not have any such treaty with China so we can not force China  in this regard.
[MS] Is China diverting water from Brahmaputra a speculation or something concrete?
[Neeraj] I first read this in Frontline in 2011 but that time this was discarded now China has openly declared to do so. Moreover China does not inspire confidence because there is huge censorship over information/press there. Same thing happened in 1962 war with China, i have read this in Himalayan Blunder, famous book by Brigadier Dalvi. Indians were thinking that Pakistan was going to attack them but it happened otherwise and we were caught unprepared.

[MS] I have also read Dalvi's book, why his entire Brigade was annihilated?
[Neeraj] Because his brigade did not have artillery support while Chinese had come prepared.
[MS] Which battle was that?
[Neeraj] Thagla ridge battle, Sir
[MS] OK
[MS] What is String of Pearl theory?
[Neeraj] China encircling India by building naval bases in Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They have already built Hambantota port in Srilanka and Gwadar in Pakistan. Pakistan-China friendship as they claim is Deeper than the deepest of Oceans and Higher than highest of the mountains so Pakistan can easily give its port to China in case of war etc.

[M1, a lady] Neeraj, you appear very intelligent but i am bemused to see that your hobby is archaeology and visiting historic places? How come it became your hobby?
[Neeraj] Mam, i did my B. Tech from IIT-BHU, Varanasi. I visited  historic site of Sarnath there and also the museum. I actually touched the National Emblem(Ashokan Capital) there. That time it started to interest me.

[M1] What are the sites you have visited?
[Neeraj] Sarnath, Qutb Complex, Karle Caves, Ajanta & Ellora caves, Daultabad Fort, Golconda Fort, Hampi, Meenakshi Temple, Winchester (city of King Alfred and Arthur).
[M1] What are the problems Indian ASI is facing?
[Neeraj] Shortage of staff, huge number of sites etc.
[M1] What are the threats to Ajanta caves?
[Neeraj] Flash camera light, vehicular pollution (I missed the vandalism part here)
[M1] Why IAS?
[Neeraj] Challenging, Public Service
[M1] IT is also challenging
[Neeraj] But public service is not there

[M2] Do you know about AFSPA? What are key provisions?
[Neeraj] (I told all the provisions and areas where it is in force, also told about the commission set up in 2004 that recommended to repeal it, He was very happy)
[M2] Do you know the name of the lady who is on strike?
[Neeraj] Irom Sharmila, fast unto death for last 12 years

[M2] Why AFSPA should not be applied in Naxal areas?
[Neeraj] It should not be applied anywhere and its should be reviewed or repealed. After all we all are Indians and no one should be allowed to have full immunity to do anything.
[M2] What innovative things you will do in rural areas?
[Neeraj] e-governance, e-FIR, MCTS, Solar Power, Agriculture BPO, Azim Premji University type venture in Education.

[M3] Who was PM of India in 1971?
[Neeraj] Indira Gandhi
[M3] Who was Indian Army chief?
[Neeraj] General Manekshaw
[M3] Who was Eastern Command Chief
[Neeraj] General Arrora
[M3] Very good
[Neeraj] Thank you Sir

[M3] Bangladesh was liberated in 1971 but Mujiburrahman was killed in 1975, why?
[Neeraj] Effect of Jamat e Islami and pro Pakistani element in Bangladesh military
[M3] Where does Brahmaputra originate?
[Neeraj] Near Mansarovar Lake
[M3] Which regions it pass through?
[Neeraj] China, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Bangladesh
[M3] Good
[M3] Assam is prone to Brahmaputra floods, show should we care China diverting water from it?
[Neeraj] Because we dont know how much water it will divert
[M3] Nixon threatened India by sending Naval battleship to Bay of Bengal, What did India do?
[Neeraj] India already had a treaty with USSR and Indira Gandhi said in meeting that dont worry, USSR is sending its nuclear submarine to counter that threat. USA buckled down finally.

[M4] You all answers were good but  have a doubt. You live in an AC environment, you simply want to join IAS for its fanfare. You are getting excellent salary, you will get less than half of what you are getting right now. Why you want to join?
[Neeraj] Sir, i still spend 1 month in my village, i still dont have an AC. I have helped my village by spreading awareness against leakage in PDS.
[M4] OK

[MS] Thank you Neeraj
[Neeraj] Thank you sir (and I walked out)
